What is the Bible?
The Bible is a collection of letters, books of law, prophecies, poems, and other spiritual writings all compiled together. It is the book that Christians use to understand God and help guide their lives. It is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right (2 Timothy 3:16).
Why is the Bible Important?
The Bible is important because Christians believe it is the word of God. Meaning, God divinely spoke (either by audible voice or by spiritual impression) to each book’s author. That author wrote down what was said and we now use it today to help guide us through our daily lives.
The Bible is the authority behind every Christian teaching. Similarly to the United States Constitution is the authority and basis for all laws in the country, the Bible is the authority and the basis of every Christian teaching.
Does the Bible Have Errors?
It’s a phrase many have heard many times “If the Bible was written by man, then there has to be a certain margin for error.” What people are getting at by saying this statement is that because the Bible was written by men and no man is perfect, the Bible may and probably does contain some errors. But 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us that “ALL scripture is breathed by God…” That means God was the one inspiring its authors. The ideas come from God, not man.
For thousands of years people have been trying to prove the Bible wrong but in fact, many of those people who try and discredit it actually have a change of heart and believe it would take more faith to believe the Bible is fallible than to believe the Bible is factual and accurate. One such popular instance of this happening was with investigative reporter Lee Strobel who wrote the incredibly popular book The Case for Christ.
In it the former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune, cross-examines a dozen experts with doctorates who are specialists in the areas of old manuscripts, textual criticism, and biblical studies. Lee challenges them with questions like “How reliable is the New Testament?” “Does evidence for Jesus exist outside the Bible?” “Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual event?” And when it was all said and done, Lee discovered that the evidence points to the Bible being historically accurate.
The Two Major Parts of the Bible
The Bible is broken down in two major parts: The Old Testament and The New Testament. The Old Testament is everything that happened before the birth of Jesus Christ and the New Testament is everything that happened and will happen since the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Old Testament is composed of 39 books which contain the Torah (the books of Moses aka the books of Jewish law), historical books, wisdom books, major prophets, and minor prophets. It starts with the creation of the entire universe and everything in it in book of Genesis and continues up until the birth of Jesus of Nazareth (also known as the Messiah or Jesus Christ).
The New Testament is composed of 27 books which contain the 4 gospel accounts of Jesus Christ, 1 historical book documenting the actions of Jesus’ disciples after His death and resurrection, letters to local churches and church leaders, and a book of prophecy (Revelation).
